As part of my journey of learning more about the indigenous firewalking traditions from around the World I’ve been looking at the African traditions recently, particularly 

The Firewalk traditions of the sans people of Southern Africa

In the Kalahari region of Southern Africa, particularly the Western Edge of the Kalahari, the ¡Kung of the Sans people still practice Firewalking in their traditional way, even to this day.  What they create and carry out with the Firewalk is extraordinary.

 who are the sans people?

The Sans People are the indigenous peoples of Southern Africa in the Kalahari region.  Also sometimes referred to as Bush People, or Saans People, they are a hunter-gatherer culture and one of the oldest surviving cultures of their kind.

There are still around 100,000 sans people in the region living to some extent in the ways of their ancestors, so that their culture is thought to be the oldest still practiced culture today. The name San itself translates as forager (from the khoekhoe language), reflecting the lifestyle of its people.

The ¡Kung are a small group of Sans People living in Namibia.  The name literally translates as ‘people’ and is the preferred name of this specific group, they’re firewalk traditions are legendary within the firewalking world.

 how do the sans people firewalk?

One of the most distinctive features of the Sans culture and their indigenous practices is the Trance Dance.  These healing dances take place through the night around 4 times a month, and often include walking the fire.

While the community gather around the fire with the women singing, and the men dancing single file around the fire with dry cocoon rattles tied round their legs, the energy (n/um in their language) was activated within the bodies of those that heal. 

 how is the sans people firewalk used for healing?

As the n/um energy rises the healers anmong the people gathered enter a transformed conscious state known within their community as ¡kia.  When in ¡kia they do not just firewalk, but pick up handfuls and rub them over bodies also. It is believed that they cleanse and purify their hands, by washing them in the fire, before placing their hands and hot coals on the chest or affected area of the person receiving the healing.

Kinachau, an experienced Sans Healer described the process of intensifying n/um and going into ¡kia..

‘You dance, dance, dance. Then n/um lifts you up in your belly and lifts you up in your back, and then you start to shiver. N/um makes you tremble, it’s hot…

Your eyes are open but you don’t look around. You hold your eyes still and look straight ahead. 

But when you get into ¡kia you’re looking around because you see everything, because you see what’s troubling everybody.

N/um enters every part of your body right to the tip of your feet and even your hair.’

 Trance dances of n/um and ¡kia last the whole night round the fire, until after dawn when everyone collapses in exhaustion and sleeps the day away, before sharing stories of their experiences together later in the day.

So, we won’t rub hot coals over your body here at Wild Soul Firewalks, BUT I do think there are some key points about firewalking that I have learned from the Sans People’s unique way of meeting with the fire.

🔥 In our modern lives of peer pressure and FOMO one of the key things about the Sans firewalking traditions that I immediately noticed is that only a very few people actually firewalk, but everyone at the fire is believed to receive the healing.

🔥 If done right Firewalking isn’t just a simple ‘breakthrough your fears’ activity, it carries the ability to create deep healing for all those involved, both emotional and physical.

🔥 Although I’ve never tried actually washing my hands in it! Fire carries great cleansing and purification properties that have been recognised by indigenous peoples from around the world for as long as we have records for.

🔥 When we want to receive healing we often have to stick with it for longer than we might like.  It may be exhausting, and we may feel like giving up, but, just as the Sans People continue through the night almost once a week, keeping focused and keeping going is key.

🔥 Working with fire is high energy, and it’s fun! I can definitely think of worse ways to spend time than dancing and singing the night away, with rattles and drums gathered round the fire.

If you’re thinking of training as a Firewalk Instructor then one thing you may have been wondering about is insurance.

Is Firewalk insurance expensive and easy to get?

There are a few different factors that will impact on the price of your insurance to cover you and your helpers for when you’re holding Firewalks BUT it is pretty easy to get insurance that we share at our trainings.

Here’s a few things you’ll need to think about…

• Training with an accredited training provider

Our Wild Soul Firewalk Instructor Certification programs are accredited by the IPHM (International Practitioners of Holistic Medicine) which means we are able to recommend Insurance companies where this accreditation is recognised and enable you to obtain preferential rates – always consider training with an organisation that is accredited as evidence of their high standards and legal understanding when it comes to things like insurance.

• Where in the World you’re based

Insurance for Firewalk Instructors based in Europe works out a lot cheaper than for those based in the US and Canada (sorry american friends!) but there are other things to take into consideration with this too.

• How many firewalking events you’ll be holding a year

The insurance broker we recommend for our US students offers insurance for up to three events at a time, whereas the European company we recommend will cover you for as many events as you like through the year.

• Other options

Many of our qualified Firewalk Instructors in the US and Canada decide to work under the cover of waivers and risk assessments – to make this as easy a choice as possible for you we include templates for all these documents within the online component of our trainings.  

So, how much is Firewalk Insurance?

Well, everyone’s quote will be different depending on many different factors such as what else they want covered, what value they want the cover to etc BUT to give you an idea, our students in Ireland and the UK often get quotes for under £300/year – this covers them for as many firewalks as they want, two helpers, AND other modalities such as shamanism or reiki included too.

Charity Firewalk In Ireland Raised Over 15,000 Euro

In September 2023 we supported a small community charity in Ireland make a huge amount of funds!  Their charity firewalk raised over 15,000 Euro – here’s how.

Getting Ready For Our Firewalk In Ireland

For the small community of the Coastal area of Kilkee in Co Clare, West Ireland, the idea of a charity firewalk was both scary and exciting. When they first got in touch with me they weren’t sure if it would be a good fit, or how they would pull it off to be able to raise the level of funds they were hoping for.

We chatted through what would be required for a venue for the Firewalk, as well as giving them a few ideas of how they could structure their ticket pricing and fundraising goals to maximise the fundraising potential of the event.

After going away and giving it some thought, they decided on how and where they would go ahead, and the idea of the charity firewalk in Ireland was born.

Plans Into Action For Our Charity Firewalk

As someone who’s worked in the third sector, it’s really important to me to not just turn up on the day to deliver a charity Firewalk, but to also support the charity with ideas on how they could move forward with raising as much money as possible.

On the months running up to the Charity Firewalk in Kilkee I had a few calls with the team there organising everything.

We had video calls with them from the venue, allowing us to plan how we could best deliver the firewalk for participants keeping them safe, and allowing for supporters to see participants walk.

We also had fundraising brainstorms – the venue was part of a nightclub which allowed for raffles, kids LEGO walks, and instagram ready selfies, all of which allowed for extra euros to be added to the fundraising in a fun and community spirited way.

On The Day Of Our Charity Firewalk In Ireland

There was a buzz all around Kilkee with the news of what was going to be happening that evening. Many many local people were getting involved, those that weren’t walking themselves (there were a few that definitely weren’t sure if they wanted to chance it) came to support the event in one way or another.

Many charities believe they have to get TONS of Firewalkers to be able to raise lots of money for their cause, but this certainly isn’t always the case. We had around 40 Firewalkers in Kilkee, all first time walkers, but the charity went on to raise in excess of 15,000 Euros – a use amount for a small charity, and an amazing amount for any charity from a one-off event.

How To Get Qualified As A Firewalk Instructor

Firewalk Instructor Training cannot be delivered online – it’s REALLY important to get lots of practice at all aspects of working with the fire while your teacher is there with you to guide and support you.

There’s lots of Firewalk specific ways of working with the fire you need to learn, including building, lighting, and tenderly tending the fire, before you move onto preparing the coals for your walkers, as well as preparing the firewalkers themselves.  It takes guidance and practice to learn and build confidence within these skillsets, that’s why Wild Soul Firewalk Instructor Training is 5 nights long and we firewalk every day at training.

You don’t need to have Firewalked before to become qualified as an Instructor – you’ll find lots more information about this in my recent blog post.

Becoming An Accredited Firewalk Instructor

It’s important that your training won’t just give you an exciting ‘retreat style experience’ but that it will also leave you qualified, confident, and accredited to go on and lead your own Firewalks.

I’ve Never Firewalked – Can I Train As An Instructor?

Whenever someone is thinking of coming to train with me as a Firewalk Instructor I like to have a quick chat with them on the phone – a chance to connect, ask questions, and see if we’re a good fit together.  One of the concerns I hear often is that they’ve never Firewalked before – can they train as an Instructor.

You CAN Train As A Firewalk Instructor If You’ve Never Firewalked

In fact it’s lovely to see someone answering the call of the fire in this way.

Fire is probably the most talked about element when it comes to transformation, and yet it’s still the least worked with in any meaningful way.  If the fire is whispering to you, then stepping up and literally taking a mighty first step into relationship with this powerful and potent element is truly a wonderful thing.

It’s often beautiful to see someone forming such strong foundations with the fire as they move through the dynamics of learning through experience, and from the fire.

BUT, There’s A But…

When it comes to Firewalking there is a lot to learn.  From building the fire in a certain way, lighting it, tenderly tending it, preparing it to be walked, and of course, preparing your participants – once you’ve learned all this you also need to grow your confidence within the skills to get ready and go out and lead others across the hot coal.

I took part in my first Firewalk on my first night of Firewalk Instructor Training.

Sadly, my training wan’t as good as what I now offer, it was shorted, with many more people, and offered no after training support – I ended up going out and supporting others with their Firewalks to learn more before I had the confidence to lead my own walks.

That said, it did ignite a passion for Firewalking within me, and open up the doorway to my deep relationship with the fire 🔥 I went on to train a a Master Firewalk Instructor, and now Grand Master Firewalker – training other instructors to step into the role of training firewalk instructors too.

NLP Firewalk In Wales

A few years ago we were invited by Laura Evans from Unleash Your PotentialUnleash Your Potential to provide a Firewalk for her NLP Conference delegates.

Laura is one of the leading certified NLP training course providers in the UK, and wanted to provide an additional day for people who had already taken part in training programmes with her. As part of this, she was keen to offer her delegates the chance to raise their energy, and their expectations of themselves, in new and exciting ways.

After chatting through the different metaphor activities we can offer, right through from glass walking to arrow breaking with the throat, we soon decided to go for a Fire. And the idea of the NLP Firewalk in Wales was born.

Laura already had Miskin ManorMiskin Manor in mind as a venue for the day, so had to check with them that they were happy for us to hold the Firewalk on their pristine lawns. They were reassured that we could completely protect the ground, and we were good to go! I was super-happy to have my first firewalk in Wales lined up!… We’ve since returned to Miskin many times, holding the Firewalk on their helipad rather than protecting the lawns.

On The Day

We turned up bright and early, and while the conference was getting underway with all things NLP inside, my team and I set everything up for the Firewalk outdoors – it was bright and sunny for the time of year, which always makes it more pleasant, but doesn’t really matter, as we can run firewalks in all weather conditions except for hurricanes. Literally.

Everything was ready to rock and roll in time for us to join the delegates for their buffet, before the Firewalk kicked off
They were all VERY excited, and keen to know how Firewalking was even possible.

When the time was right everyone came together outside for the lighting of the fire. It was a powerful time which gave everyone taking part the opportunity to set their intentions for what they’d like to gain from the firewalk, as well as thinking about behaviour patterns and beliefs that no longer served them that they might like to leave behind after their walk.

Then, leaving the firetender to look after our fire, we headed back indoors where I prepared everyone to walk in a safe but impactful way.

Some people were surprised that they could choose to walk more than once, and some had questions about what it would feel like, or what they should expect.

After about 90 minutes the fire had burned down enough to walk, and we all headed outside with excitement (as well as a lot of nerves)

A Great Success

Of course, it would be easy for me to tell you that the NLP Firewalk in Wales was a great success! I really enjoyed the event, and loved the energy and commitment to play full out that the delegates brought with them, but here’s some feedback we had from the day too…

What Should I Bring To A Firewalk?

I get asked this question all. the. time. Really, all the time. But the reality is the answer I give rarely satisfies the curious questioner. You see, you don’t really need to bring anything.

Of course, it is helpful if you wear clothes and footwear that will allow you easy access to bare feet. Some people like to have some wipes handy if their feet get mucky, and some like to bring some Aloe Vera jelly, just in case their feet feel super-hot afterwards…. they rarely hurt, but feel very tingly, like I explain here.

There’s nothing you really need to bring to a firewalk, but…

… saying you don’t need to bring anything other than yourself is not a very sexy answer, I realise.  It’s not a very exciting, is it?!

Then over the last couple of weeks I’ve been making up playlists for events and I found this song, and I thought that’s it! That’s what you should bring to a firewalk. Even me when I’m getting ready to walk, all anyone needs at a firewalk is a willingness to…

Bring your secrets, bring your scars Bring your glory, all you are
Bring your daylight, bring your dark Share your silence
And unpack your heart

Will Firewalking Burn My Feet?

When it comes to my work there are two questions that I get asked most frequently. One is ‘what do you wear in a sweat lodge?’ and the second is ‘will firewalking burn my feet?’. So, I guess it’s about time I addressed the issue of smouldering feet, which is a bit more complex than you might expect! Let me break it down to make it easy…

What does firewalking feel like on your feet?

Firewalking can feel different at different times, this is partly because different woods burn at different temperatures, and also form different types of coals. So sometimes a firewalk can feel quite hard, more like a gravel path. Sometimes it can feel pretty darn hot – I call it spicy. Sometimes it can feel quite tingly too.

The most common experience of a firewalk is nothing uncomfortable, but a tingly buzz that lasts for a while afterwards.

When you get the opportunity, stand up, and spread your arms out to your sides. Count 3, 2, 1, and clap your hands together as hard as you can. You’ll notice for a while afterwards that your hands have a buzz to them, but don’t hurt. This is the easiest way to experience a similar thing to the feeling of firewalking on your feet.

Is Firewalking a trick?

Nope. It’s a real fire. A really, really hot, real fire.
So I guess the next question has to be….

How hot is a firewalk?

I don’t really like working with numbers, I think that as soon as you start going into that area when you are firewalking you are at risk of slipping into ego, so I never measure my  firewalks. Temperature or length…. It’s all a bit freudian when you get that way 😉

I tend to just tell people that the coals they are about to walk would melt a car engine block if you sat it on top. But those that do measure the temperatures have recorded anything up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, but, to be honest, I personally doubt that the majority of fires are quite that hot.

Numbers aside, once the fire has burned down, and the coals are ready to walk, they’re seriously really really hot! So this brings us right back where we started….

Will firewalking burn?

“My feet are very soft”… “I can’t walk very quickly”…. “I’m told I have a heavy gait”… “I only have short legs”.. I’ve probably heard all the worries about walking hot coals there are to hear over the years.

If a firewalk is that hot, how come it doesn’t burn your feet?

Well the truth is that sometimes it does… but before you run and hide and swear not to firewalk EVER, please read on.

As a firewalk facilitator trainer, it’s my job to make sure Wild Soul Firewalk Facilitators  get everyone across the coals safely and enjoyably, but the reason I call them  facilitators, not instructors is that, when we get down to the real nitty-gritty of firewalking, the fire is the teacher.

What this means is that I trust that the fire will give everyone what they need, or what they are truly looking for. I equip people to be able to attain the right level of energy and focus to firewalk, respect for the fire and maintaining that level of focus and energy makes firewalking a hugely impactful and empowering experience for everyone involved. This doesn’t mean thatyou need to be in a ‘hippie, or hypnotic state’ it means you have to approach the fire with respect and an open heart.

At Wild Soul firewalks people regularly get the opportunity to walk more than once. I have often seen people walk once, and their feet are fine. They walk again, and their feet are still absolutely fine. Then maybe on their third or fourth time crossing the coals they start to get a little blasé, maybe even a little bit cocky. As they stop respecting the fire, it can sometimes give a wee blister, just to remind people that this is not a game.

We call this type of blister a Fire Kiss. In reality, it is nothing worse than when a new pair of shoes rubs a wee blister on your foot. If you don’t focus on it, the blister will be gone in a few days, and will not cause any problems in the meantime.

And just like a bit of toast that’s been in the toaster too long, just underneath it’s soft and fresh and as good as new.

What does this mean for a firewalker?

On the other end of the scale, I’ve walked 108 fires in one evening. Twice. Without even the weeniest of blisters on my feet. In fact, hundreds, probably thousands, of people firewalk every year around the world, safely and enjoyably.

It’s important to walk with a qualified facilitator who has trained with an Internationally Accredited Firewalking School (don’t be afraid to ask for credentials if you don’t see anything on their website) preferably with a qualified fire tender too.

Pay attention during the pre-walk talk. When your mind is on the firewalk it may well be that you’ll have forgotten a lot of what was said just a few days later, but on the day take the time to listen to what’s going on.

And most importantly, trust the process. Trust the fire. Set your intentions for a really fulfilling and magical experience – take my word for it that the facilitator will have done this, and probably asked their whole tribe to do the same for the event too. I know for certain here at the Wild Soul Tribe facilitators always post in our alumni group when they have Firewalks coming up, to enable the whole tribe to lend good wishes and support to their events.

When your moment comes, stop worrying ‘will firewalking burn my feet?’ and enjoy all that the fire brings!

It also means that you get a much-needed opportunity to grow your experience of working with the fire.  Building beautiful Firewalk fires, lighting fires easily (without using smelly accelerants or blow-torches), tending the coals ready to be walked.  All of these skills are essential to have lots of practice of before you go out to the public for your first Firewalk.

International Accreditation

As well as giving you confidence in the standard of our trainings, and automatic access to membership-level at the IPHM, accreditation will make it easier for you to reach out to venues, enable you to access lower-cost insurance, and ensure that your own events are of a super-safe standard without that feeling like hard work.

Online Component

No, this doesn’t mean there’s loads of additional online learning to do!  But what you will find is reminders of much of the information we cover in live training.  What types of wood, what length arrows, how to protect the ground… it’s all there.

We also won’t try and sell you things like arrows or wooden boards at a huge mark-up price – instead, the online component includes information about stockists where you can purchase directly.  Saving you time, effort, and money.

There are also copies of all our documents such as Risk Assessments, Waivers, Site Surveys etc so you can just download these, add all your own information, and off you go.

Firewalk Instructors that have trained with others pay £1000 for access to this part of our training, but it’s all included for you within Wild Soul Training.

1-to-1 at live training

Wild Soul Firewalk Instructor Training is set up to ensure you receive 1-to-1 attention from your trainer.  We do this by capping numbers to ensure your group isn’t rammed.  There’s space to ask me questions directly, and receive a little more support in areas where it might be needed straight from me, at the time you’re learning.

I’ve been certifying Firewalk Instructors since 2018, and still know them all by name.

You’ll never find all the accommodation at the site in Ireland full, even at times when courses have been fully booked 4 months in advance.

Mentoring through your first Firewalk

I would love to spend my time traveling the world attending students Firewalks, but of course this is not possible BUT, I do mentor students through their first Firewalk preparation via WhatsApp.

Wild Soul Firewalk Instructor Training is good enough that you won’t NEED this level of support, BUT it’s still nice to have someone in your corner as you’re making the decisions for your first event, giving you extra confidence and clarity, and enabling you to focus on what you’re creating for your participants.

While the cost of certifying in other practices, such as breathwork, has risen over and again in recent years, Wild Soul Firewalk Instructor Training is still well under £3000 for everything included.

Training is expensive enough for you to be reassured of our high standards without any corner-cutting, but low-cost enough for you to know that you’ll be able to swiftly make a good return on your financial investment, especially with all the additional support included with Wild Soul Training.

Vibrant Wild Soul alumni group

Going forward from your first event you don’t lose the ability to ask me, and other Wild Soul Firewalkers, questions.

Our alumni group is a vibrant forum where so many of my past students actively participate – asking questions, sharing pictures from their events, supporting one another, and creating International opportunities.

As quite a new feature, through the group you can also leave your details to be listed on our website too.

Certification to work with other modalities

Wild Soul Firewalk instructor Training doesn’t just certify you to work with Firewalks, it includes certification to work with these other modalities

This means that you leave equipped with an array of Breakthrough Empowerment activities to be able to take out to your participants, keeping them coming back time and again to take part in different workshops, ceremonies, and retreats.
